John began camping while growing up in Iowa, but soon bored with typical campgrounds.
Moving to Connecticut in high school, a magazine article introduced John to backpacking on the Appalachian Trail. He moved to Colorado (BS zoology) and Washington (MS entomology) for college and the wilder outdoors.
