Back then, there was the book, "Freedom of the Hills," and lots of mistakes. John atop Mount Mansfield, Vermont in January (left). New to the Pacific northwest, I climbed Mount St. Helens solo, rather naive. I wised up and eventually became a senior climbing instructor for the Colorado Mountain Club, when I moved to Boulder.
