Netherlands, Haarlem. Stage Technique.
The left photo can stand on its own as a landscape and it's enhanced by the overhead framing of the tree branch. Here, the Spaarne River acts as a horizontal frame, since it's rather uninteresting.
In the left photo, I enlarged the water to be a stage for passing boats. Its diagonal line lets you see more of the boat than head on. The stage technique lets you refine your composition because your subjects keep coming by.
