I still get up plenty early for sunrise, but I've learned to be more patient. I wait for the canyon to fill with light, so there aren't so many shadow. I'm not a big fan of BIG shadows because they have no color or detail. They usually don't tell me much, unless they're a silhouette.

Here, I stepped back and composed with plenty of well-lit foreground. When a friend sat in front of me, I moved to position her in front of the shadow and waited for the decisive moment.
She loved the photo of her. Much better than disturbing the moment by asking her to pose.
