You visit the Grand Canyon and run to the guardrail, lean over and take a photo - just like a million other visitors that year. Now step back and include the rail. This gives the viewer a place to envision standing some day. Next, compose a 'stage,' an area where people will inevitably stand. When fellow travelers are in frame and look good, take a photo - unobtrusively.
Stage technique can be used anywhere, with anyone from friends to the indigenous.
